The Most Covetable of Gifts.

April is FULL of birthdays. It's birthday month. Or, as we like to think of it, Christmas-Part-Deux.

This year I decided to make my nieces, turning five and seven, an Earring Advent Calendar.

What? You don't know what an earring advent calendar is?? Well, let me tell you....

When I was eight (or was it ten?), I received an earring calendar for my birthday. It was the whole month of June, like the page from a wall calendar, mounted on a Styrofoam back. For every day on that calendar, from the 1st to the 30th, there was a pair of sweet little earrings, just for me.

It was, by far, the best birthday gift I've ever received. I would sit in my closet, pouring over the earrings, touching them.....loving them. It seemed entirely luxurious and excessive to have THIRTY pairs of earrings, I mean really?

I was never a *girly* girl and yet I spent hours coveting those earrings: deciding which ones to wear, which ones to save, which ones were my favorite, which ones were my second favorite.....it was the best.

So here is my version of the Earring Advent Calendar, for my gorgeous nieces, on their Easter Birthday.

I made some sketches, inspired by an embroidery pattern from Mollie Makes Magazine. Then I asked the wonderful, talented, generous DJ Berger (see more of him HERE) to scan in the drawings and turn them into a calendar, starting in April and ending in March.....celebrating their birthday year. (He also mounted them on foam board for me, which was more than I could have asked for. THANK YOU!)

To finish the calendar, I pushed one pair of earrings into each of the monthly drawings. 12 pairs of earrings. 12 sweet little pairs of earrings.

I just love the way they've turned out.....

and so does this little girl. My little girl. Coveting those earrings, just like someone I remember........

Have a wonderful long weekend!

  1. What an amazing idea. I noticed I was so excited I was holding my breath! ... thinking of course, how I would have loved that when I was a little girl!
