Home Made Stocking Stuffers.

Stockings can be SO insanely expensive. All of the little things can really add up and, in our experience, our kids love all the little packages they receive because they're small and cute, not because of what they are or how much they cost. It really is just the thought that counts.

So, in the interest of saving some $, and making more thoughtful gifts for our children, I decided to come up with some quick, easy to make stocking stuffers...

Candy Cane Playdough
A new favorite. We made this for Winnie (and Pippa's!) friends. It was the perfect project for little helping hands.

I used the recipe below, added peppermint essential oil (or extract) and then dyed half of it red. We then layered the playdough in jars on a slight angle.....the end product looks AND smells like a candy cane!

Candy Cane Playdough Recipe:

1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoon cream of tartar (find it in the spice section)
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
Peppermint essential oil or exctract
red food coloring

Mix first 4 ingredients in a pan. Add water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”. Remove from stove and knead for 5 minutes–add food coloring and essential oil during kneading process.

This playdough keeps for ages in a sealed container.

Gnomes
I learned to make these at The Mulberry School. I included them in our advent calendar....but they'd be great in stockings too!

Felted hedgehogs!
This guy still needs a little work, but you get the idea. Little animals made from felted wool. Kids love 'em and needle felting is a moving meditation....some much needed "time out" at this time of year.

You can come up with ideas on your own (the hedgehog was my friend, Sienna's, idea) or use a book to direct your felting.

Book Marks
My friend, S, made these for Valentine's Day last February...but they were made with hearts, not trees, of course! I decided to make a holiday version of this simple bookmark.
Cut out felt trees in varying sizes and stitch together.

Have a Wonderful Monday!

  1. Great ideas Jill! Just a tip about the playdough... add the coloring to the 1 cup of water,it makes it easier to combine the color at the cooking process, instead of kneading it in after.
Hope you and the family are doing great. Happy Holidays!
