What I've Learned So Far.....

I've been up to my elbows in this lovely (not so) little gardening book: The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. It really is a wealth of knowledge and I totally recommend it for all gardening newbies....

Here is what I've learned so far:

1. It's all about the soil. I've always know that soil is important. It's kind of a given. I just didn't know much about the components of soil, what constitutes ideal soil....or what to do if your soil isn't great. The whole thing just seemed really difficult and overwhelming.

Barbara Damrosch breaks it down quite simply and it seems that organic matter (like compost) can fix most soil issues. So, step one this year will be installing two compost bins that we'll rotate through from year to year...one getting scraps while we use the other....This year we'll have to buy compost as currently we compost through the city. I can't believe we're giving that stuff away!!!

2. Start Small. This has never really been my strong point. My ideal garden will actually be two separate gardens...one with lettuce and herbs and another for the rest of our vegetables with a few rows of flowers for cutting. Endless fresh flowers in the house = heaven.

But, I am doing my best to take a lesson from Ms. Damrosch, and I'm scaling down the dream this year. I plan to plant lettuce, herbs and 8 other vegetables. Kind of small. Hopefully, small enough that I can manage the time and care required to keep this project alive:)

This weekend we started some herbs and leafy greens (like arugula and watercress) inside, in pots. It was super exciting and I can't wait to get the "early" plants in the ground ASAP.

Which takes me to the third and final thing I have so far, for sure:

3. Getting our bushy, weedy patch of ground ready for planting is going to be a lot of work...back breaking work.
Wish me luck!
