I'm a bit late with this one, but not to worry.....you won't be disappointed! For the month of May I would like to introduce you to Dr. Peter Pain and Dr. Laura Gifford: the dynamic chiropractic duo, and parents to three spirited children, who have just recently opened The Live Well Center downtown.

{Here is where I admit that I am shamelessly self-promoting, as I have just joined The Live Well Center....I would also like to mention that I took most of these pics while the building was just completing renovations. We were mid-move but you can still see the beautiful architecture and style that define downtown limestone buildings in Kingston!}
Prior to opening The Live Well Center, Dr. Pain and Dr. Gifford practiced chiropractics in a smaller space within the same building at Royal Artillery Park, 348 Bagot St. Their very busy practice has been located downtown since 2000. The practice grew, and Peter and Laura both recognized that it was time to expand the space and fulfill their dream of having a true wellness center.
They have since taken over two other offices, renovating and opening the space into one beautiful clinic offering: chiropractic care, naturopathic medicine, massage therapy, functional exercise and postural assessments and more!
Dr. Pain is the "brains" behind the business. On top of his very busy practice, he runs the numbers and masterminded the renovation.....no small feat! Peter graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1997. Prior to that, he attended Queens University where he was a member of the Golden Gaels Football team, winning the Vanier Cup in 1992. Dr. Pain continues to participate in regular physical activity including: marathons, triathalons, and cross-country skiing.
Dr. Gifford.....likes to talk even more than I do!? She is bubbly, upbeat and an absolute joy to be around. Smart, funny and laid back, Dr. Gifford is a wonderful chiropractor and mama of three. Her main passions are pediatrics and peri-natal care, though she maintains an eclectic practice.
Here is what they have to say about their new clinic!

Jill: Tell us about the new space!
Peter and Laura: We are totally excited about the new space, as it finally allows us to do the things we have been dreaming about doing for several years.
First, we have more varied health practitioners to offer services, such as massage therapy, naturopathy, and exercise therapy. It is exciting working with other practitioners with the common goal of enhancing the health of our community.
Second, the new space gives us more room so that we can work side by side simultaneously, as opposed to only alternating times, hence we see a lot more of each other!
Third, we have the exercise studio, which will allow our patients to do their specific exercises under proper supervision, as well as, offer important but unique health and fitness programs.
The space is beautifully done, in one of the most historical buildings in downtown Kingston, close to everything and yet has it's own parking lot (very rare)!

Jill: What is your personal health philosophy?
Laura and Peter: Well, it's pretty simple......move well, eat well, think well....be well. We try to live as close to nature as possible. Which includes, choosing food that is from nature, not a factory....Starbucks was around 100 years ago wasn't it??? We make sure our family plays outside for extended periods every day, and we live by the 80/20 principle. .....we do the best we can 80% of the time and our body can absorb the other 20%....aka Starbucks!!!

Jill: What types of programs do you plan to run in the exercise studio?
Peter and Laura: Our intention for the exercise studio is multifold. First, patients can use the space after an appointment to do any exercises they need, perhaps for re-hab or simply for re-training and fitness. We will have a full-time exercise trainer there to make sure all exercises are done properly and safely. We are also going to schedule specific training classes for the most important components of health and fitness, such as: core stability classes, post-natal core re-training classes, ball stability classes and foam roller classes for soft tissues injuries. The space will also host several yoga classes per week, concentrating on gentle and restorative yoga, and hopefully some pilates as well.

Jill: What are your favorite places to eat and play in Kingston?
Laura and Peter:Favorite places to eat would have to include the best homemade take-out in town from the Kitschen on Ontario Street. When we are childless, we love Woodenhead's as a guaranteed "go-to" where we will most assuredly get great food and atmosphere. And, although not a restaurant, our most regular food stop is from Wendy's Mobile Market....Fresh local food delivered to our doorstep every Friday night! In terms of play, we stick close to home, playing on the trails and golf course by our house.

If you'd like to meet the docs, Dr. Pain and Dr. Gifford will both be at
The Earth, Body and Spirit Expo June 5th and 6th.
Dr. Gifford and I are both part of the organizing committee for Birth Fest this year and we will be at McBurney Park for part of the day June 5th.
Hope to see you there!
Happy Monday!
