Word on the street is that V. Van Gogh went mad from exposure to toxins in his art studio.......it was definitely that. That or the absinthe.
Either way, exposure to toxins in art supplies may pose health risks. Children, in particular, tend to be more vulnerable because of their immature nervous systems and developing organs.

There are many other websites out there and a plethora of eco-friendly, non-toxic products on the market. Here are a few products we really love and a list of other resources you can pick from.
Recycled Crayon Sticks and Tempra Paints: The crayons are 100% recycled. "Through the National Crayon Recycling Program more than 45,000 pounds of old, rejected, and broken crayons have been rescued before going to landfills. Purchasing recycled crayon sticks supports recycling education and employs people with disabilities."

Crayon Rocks: These are a favorite! "Made from non-toxic soy wax and tinted with natural mineral powders, Crayon Rocks make vibrant colors and beautiful textures. The pebble shape crayons are easy to hold and encourage the use of tripod grip to develop fine motor skills. They are specially shaped to allow small fingers to color in large, wide strokes, promoting confidence in creating art." These come in an adorable little bag and, at $6.95, are great to keep on hand for gifts!
For Me! Eco Highlighters: "Dry highlighter pencils with natural wood finish and jumbo hexagonal shape. Unlike standard plastic fiber tip highlighters, these wood pencil highlighters use no ink solvents, no volatile organic compounds and are biodegradable."
Recycled Eco-Felt and Giant Colored Pencils: The felt is recycled and the pencils are made from reforested wood.
Stockmar Block Crayons: Waldorf crayons that are made from 100% beeswax. They're good enough to eat! These are the #1 art supply in our house at the moment! (not from Stubby Pencil Studio)
My only criticism: the shipping fees! Make large orders. Even better, go in with 2-3 friends so you can split the shipping fees, making ordering online easy and affordable.
Other Great Resources:BC Playthings
Bella Luna Toys
Hip Mountain Mama
Oh, so lovely! Thanks for the tips. And gorgeous photos.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link to Bella Luna Toys! Just wanted to point out that we carry the Stockmar Beeswax Block Crayons pictured above. And I hear you about shipping fees! I hate placing an order online then discovering that the shipping fees come to $12 or more. That's why I initiated $5.95 flat rate shipping at Bella Luna Toys. No surprises!
