My friend A was the first person to slow me down long enough to teach me about baby steps. We were nearing the end of our naturopathic education and there was a lot going on: What kind of practice would we run? How would we ever pay off our mortgage-sized student loans? How could we possibly balance marriage, children and careers?
I, of course, had BIG plans and with those big plans were BIG worries. Cause, the thing is, when you always need everything to be big, and fast, and immediate, life can feel a little……..overwhelming. My very sweet friend, suggested that I stop worrying about the end point and just take “baby steps”. One foot in front of the other, that’s all. No worrying about what has been or what might be coming. Just living in the moment, happy to moving forward. For me it was an “A-HA!” moment and I have reminded myself, more than once, to just sloooow down and take baby steps.
Lately though, I’ve been forgetting. I’ve gotten caught up.
It wasn’t until I saw my 17-month old daughter climb steps, ON HER OWN, to the top of a slide and hurl herself down, that I realized how far I could get, one itty-bitty little step at a time .
Lying

Sitting

Crawling

Standing

Walking

Running
Sliding!

In 17 short months, my little girl has morphed from motionless blob (I say that in the nicest of possible ways) to a running, jumping, dancing marvel…..one muscle twitch, one hand grasp, one smile, one step at a time.
So today, I am going to slow down. Enjoy the afternoon, a cup of tea, and the sun shining through the window. One foot in front of the other. No rush.
Happy Friday!
